Preston began his accounting career in 1968. In 1981 he became a partner at McCulloch & Menzies. He later served as the partner in charge of the Hastings office when the firm used its international accounting name “Touche Ross”.

Preston was a partner of Richardson Epplett and Partners, before founding Epplett & Co. in April 2002.

He specialises in family group reorganisations including Trusts and Estates. He also has expertise in the education and rural sectors. His interest and knowledge of Information Technology made him the natural choice for to fulfill the role at the time of regional IT director for Touche Ross.

Preston is married to Jenny. They have four children and are proud grandparents to eight grandchildren.

Preston is an avid sports fan and has a particular interest in cricket and rugby. He is also a ten-pin bowler and plays in 3 weekly leagues. He was recently elected president of the NZ 55+ Tenpin Bowling Association.

Preston is active in the community. He has filled a number of significant roles in the Catholic Parish of St Peter Chanel and in the Palmerston North Diocese. He is current Chairman of the Finance committee of the Catholic Parish of Hastings. He also served as a board of trustees member of St Mary’s, Hastings for 10 years. Preston was awarded a Fellowship of the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand in 2015, a honour for outstanding service to the profession and community.
